Plot

Set in 2008, Harry Rawlings (Liam Neeson) is a renowned thief. However, when he and his partners Carlos (Manuel Garcia-Rulfo), Florek (Jon Bernthal), and Jimmy (Coburn Goss) are killed during a botched robbery, his grieving wife Veronica (Viola Davis) is threatened by crime boss Jamal Manning (Brian Tyree Henry), the man Harry robbed, for the $2 million he has lost. Manning needs this to finance his electoral campaign for alderman of a South Side precinct, where he is running against Jack Mulligan (Colin Farrell), the son of the incumbent Tom Mulligan (Robert Duvall).
Veronica starts using Harry’s notebook, which contains a detailed plan of his next heist, to get the money she needs. She recruits two of the other widows, Linda (Michelle Rodriguez) and Alice (Elizabeth Debicki) to help carry out the robbery. The fourth widow, Amanda (Carrie Coon), does not show at the initial meeting; when Veronica talks to Amanda later and hears that she has a small baby she opts not to mention the heist plan to her. Alice buys the van and guns they will need; Linda makes some progress towards finding the building on the blueprints, but ultimately Alice uses a real estate executive, David (Lukas Haas), with whom she is having a sexual relationship as an escort, to identify they are of the Mulligan's house/headquarters.
When Veronica's chauffeur Bash (Garret Dillahunt) is murdered by the Mannings, she seeks another driver for the heist, visiting Amanda for recommendations. Veronica realizes that Harry faked his death and is hiding in Amanda's house, deducing that Amanda's baby is Harry's and he killed her husband and his other partners to be with his new family. Harry reached a deal with Jack to rob Jamal in order to stop his electoral campaign dead in its tracks, and pay off the coroner. In flashbacks, it is revealed that Veronica and Harry's son Marcus was killed in a police shooting during a traffic stop, which put ongoing strain on their marriage.
As a driver and fourth team member Linda suggests her babysitter Belle (Cynthia Erivo). Veronica is initially suspicious but is impressed when Belle stands up to her. Veronica visits the Mulligan house both to ask Jack to help protect her from Manning (a request he rebuffs) and to case the premises in advance of the heist while Belle investigates the external security. The group robs Jack while he is at a debate but is interrupted by Tom, who shoots and wounds Alice; they return fire, killing him. After successfully stealing the money, the widows are double-crossed by Jamal, who sends his brother Jatemme (Daniel Kaluuya) to take the money from them. The group chases him down, killing Jatemme when they run him off the road, and retrieve the money. The group splits up and goes their separate ways. At the hideout, Harry returns to take the money back from Veronica so that he can build a new life with Amanda. After being attacked by Harry, Veronica kills him, before setting off an explosion.
Jack wins the election on a wave of public sympathy following his father's death. Linda buys a boutique, Alice sets up her own business, and Belle moves away with her daughter to a new city after giving her boss enough money to pay off a debt to Jack. Veronica donates much of her share to endow a library project in her son's memory. Veronica and Alice encounter each other in a diner, where they initially ignore each other, but Veronica approaches Alice outside, smiling as the grief lifts off her shoulders.
